As a historian, I hope to uncover and present hidden histories. I aim to become a museum administrator and encourage research of under-represented groups of people in the field of history. These stories need to be uncovered and shared to truly offer a rich and vibrant story of humankind.

As an oral history intern, I listened to oral histories left by visitors to the museum and drew connections between the past and present. In addition, I have met and spoken with several influential African Americans.

Oral History Intern

As an oral history intern, I consulted a variety of genealogic materials such as censuses, wills, probate records, and pension requests in order to find subjects to interview. In addition to this research, I organized and transcribed four oral history interviews from local members of the African American community, and then analyzed historic documents such as newspapers, service letters, and slave narratives to place what I’d learned into context.

At Fort Monroe, I conducted preservation services including assessment, research, and conservation of one historic structure (Building 50, a 19th century officer’s quarters), and utilized a variety of tools such as saws, hammers, and sanders to perform the necessary repairs. At each step of the process, I documented all steps of preparation, repair, and replacement per Department of Interior Standards.
Florida Holocaust Museum
Collections and Exhibitions Intern

At the Holocaust Museum, I conducted research to establish names and dates of items in a number of collections, and additionally accessioned four separate collections into the museum’s database. I also learned how to conduct preventative maintenance of collections environments including temperature, humidity control, and pest prevention. In addition to this, I documented exhibit and collection materials by photographing, cataloging, and archiving them.
Institute on World War II and the Human Experience

As an archival assistant, I catalogued primary materials such as letters, postcards, and photographs from a variety of WWII servicemen. I then conducted research to establish identities, sources, and data of the men and women who served in the conflict, and cataloged my findings in an established museum database for researchers to utilize.

Under Dr. Doel’s instruction, I conducted research to establish historical context in unpublished images of people of color, and analyzed the role of marginalized groups in the sciences and the humanities. In addition to this, I created and maintained a website to supplement a published scholarly work authored by Dr. Doel and his research team.

As an intern, I created spreadsheets to track and manage time usage in the conservation labs with information gained from our collection management database, utilized technology to conduct research on different topics in the frame of preventative conservation work, ranging from temperature control standards to the history of objects that needed to be surveyed. I also prepared examinations of objects, composed treatment reports, and successfully treated several pieces from the museum collections.
